Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has taken swift action following the heavy rainfall that hit Nairobi on Sunday night, causing destruction and loss of life. In response to the situation, Sakaja issued five directives to mitigate the effects of the disaster.

In a statement released on Monday, March 25, Sakaja instructed the Nairobi Water Sewerage Company to deploy water bowsers to affected areas to provide residents with clean water. He also called on public health officers and Community Health Providers (CHP) to offer on-the-ground support by distributing water treatment tablets and providing psychosocial support to those affected by the floods.

Assuring Nairobi residents of the county government’s commitment to monitoring the situation and preventing further loss of life and property, Sakaja urged residents living in riparian and flood-prone areas to heed the calls of the Disaster Management teams to move to safer locations. He also extended his condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones and emphasized the collaboration between the county government, national government, National Police Service, and the Red Cross in providing emergency support to affected residents.

In an effort to address the issue of clogged drainage systems in Nairobi, Sakaja issued a directive to Green Nairobi, a team employed by the county government to clean the city and unclog drainages. He specifically ordered the deployment of 170 Green Army personnel to unblock drainages in areas prone to flooding.

Additionally, Sakaja instructed the Disaster Management Team to work in collaboration with the National Police Service, Red Cross, and National Disaster Operations Center in search and rescue efforts for missing persons. The governor’s statement came hours after the heavy rains caused disruptions in transport, flooded houses, and swept away individuals.

In response to calls from Nairobi residents for a functioning drainage system and efficient disaster response team, Sakaja emphasized the county government’s commitment to addressing these concerns. Meanwhile, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned residents of potential heavy rainfall in certain parts of the city and advised them to be prepared.

The actions taken by Governor Sakaja demonstrate a proactive approach to managing the aftermath of the heavy rainfall in Nairobi and providing support to affected residents. By mobilizing resources, collaborating with key stakeholders, and implementing directives to address immediate concerns, the county government is working towards minimizing the impact of natural disasters on the city and its residents.
