President William Ruto issued a stern warning to government employees regarding potential corruption scandals in the Affordable Housing Programme. During the Signing of the Housing Bill into law at State House Nairobi on March 19, the President emphasized his zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, outlining measures in place to prevent such occurrences.

One of the key points highlighted by Ruto was the government’s agreement on the pricing of building materials to prevent inflated prices. He stressed the importance of transparency and integrity in the implementation of the programme, especially considering that Kenyan citizens were making monthly contributions towards it.

The President emphasized that corruption had no place in the Affordable Housing Programme, as it would undermine the goal of creating job opportunities and providing affordable housing for the people of Kenya. He vowed to take decisive action against anyone found engaging in corrupt practices, stating that the programme would be free from corruption.

The Affordable Housing Act includes stringent penalties for those involved in misappropriating funds, with fines of up to Ksh10 million and mandatory fines double the misappropriated amount. Ruto also directed the Ministry of Lands to ensure that social amenities, including designated changing rooms for women, are provided at construction sites to promote gender equality.

In his address, President Ruto called for public support for the programme, highlighting its potential to create jobs for the youth and transform slums into sustainable housing estates. He expressed his commitment to eradicating slums like Kibera within the next decade, emphasizing the importance of providing adequate housing for all citizens.

Overall, President Ruto’s comments underscored the government’s determination to combat corruption and ensure the successful implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme. By prioritizing transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, the government aims to deliver on its promise of providing affordable housing and improving the quality of life for all Kenyan citizens.
