President William Ruto is gearing up for a significant trip to Morocco in the near future, with the primary agenda being discussions on the establishment of a fertiliser industry in Kenya. The initiative was reportedly initiated by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei in collaboration with Morocco’s head of diplomacy.

PS Sing’Oei took a trip to Morocco on March 21 to personally deliver Ruto’s request for talks to King Mohammed VI, a request that was promptly approved. The official agreement for the establishment of a fertiliser company in Kenya is expected to be finalized and announced during President Ruto’s upcoming visit to Morocco.

Furthermore, reports indicate that Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi is actively engaged in discussions with the Moroccan fertiliser giant OCP to determine the future of this proposed facility. Kenya is looking to emulate the success of other African countries like Nigeria and Ethiopia, who have reaped the benefits of Moroccan expertise in the fertiliser industry.

The announcement of this potential partnership comes on the heels of Kenya’s recent establishment of an embassy in Morocco. On March 8, President Ruto appointed Jessica Muthoni Gakinya as the new Kenyan ambassador to Morocco, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

However, these developments are taking place against a backdrop of challenges in the distribution of government fertilisers to farmers across Kenya. The distribution process has been marred by reports of fake fertiliser dealers, prompting the government to launch a crackdown on such illicit activities.

In response to these allegations, Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi dismissed claims of fake government fertiliser as propaganda on March 29. He commended the farming community for their resilience and urged them not to be swayed by misinformation spread by unscrupulous individuals.

President Ruto’s upcoming visit to Morocco holds significant promise for the fertiliser industry in Kenya. By leveraging Moroccan expertise and resources, Kenya aims to boost its agricultural sector and improve food security in the country. The partnership between the two nations is poised to yield mutual benefits and foster greater cooperation in the agricultural domain. As preparations for the visit continue, all eyes are on the positive outcomes that this collaboration could bring to Kenya’s fertiliser industry and overall agricultural advancement.
