President William Ruto of Kenya recently announced that Kenyans currently enrolled in the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) must undergo a re-registration process to access benefits under the new Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Program. Speaking to residents of Chepalungu in Bomet, the president assured that the Ministry of Health would soon release detailed guidelines on the registration process for citizens.
The president emphasized the importance of the UHC program in addressing healthcare challenges, especially for those who are economically disadvantaged. He urged individuals to prepare for the re-registration process to ensure that everyone is included in the list of recipients who will receive free treatment in hospitals.
Furthermore, President Ruto stated that the government is planning to reduce the monthly contributions for individuals with low incomes and cover the full costs for those who cannot afford any payments. However, he clarified that each Kenyan’s financial capacity would be assessed to determine their contribution amount.
“We will cover the expenses for those with no financial capability, individuals with limited means will contribute 300, and those with higher incomes will contribute more,” the president explained. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one has to sell their assets to cover hospital bills, stating that healthcare expenses are the government’s responsibility.
The government is in the process of transitioning from the NHIF to the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which was implemented in October 2023. SHIF plays a significant role in Kenya’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The new scheme will provide comprehensive health insurance to all Kenyan residents, enabling them to access healthcare services at accredited public, private, and faith-based facilities. Through SHIF, the government aims to expand access to healthcare and improve the overall health outcomes of the population.
As part of the shift to SHIF, President Ruto emphasized the need for Kenyans to re-register with the new system to ensure that they can continue to benefit from healthcare services under the UHC program. He encouraged residents to stay informed about the registration process and to actively participate in securing their healthcare coverage.
