The police in Nairobi, Kenya are preparing to crack down on vehicles fitted with unauthorized strobe lights and sirens due to safety concerns raised by road users. This initiative was authorized by Head of Public Services Felix Koskei in a letter dated February 15, 2024, which was forwarded to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

Koskei expressed concern over the numerous government and privately owned vehicles that have been installed with strobe lights, sirens, and related equipment without lawful authorization, stating that this is a breach of the law and poses safety and security risks to road users. Citing the Traffic Act, he emphasized that the use of a siren is strictly prohibited, except for authorized vehicles such as police cars, ambulances, and fire engines. Therefore, using a siren in an unauthorized vehicle is considered an offense.

He outlined the process for obtaining approvals for the installation and use of strobe lights, sirens, and associated equipment for vehicles not authorized by the Act, stating that individuals wishing to use such equipment must request authorization following the provided procedure. Koskei also notified various government officials, including Principal Secretaries, Accounting Officers, and heads of different government bodies, about the need for strict compliance and enforcement of these regulations.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of adhering to the regulations outlined in the Traffic Act to ensure the safety and security of all road users. The crackdown on unauthorized vehicles with strobe lights and sirens is part of the efforts to uphold the law and protect the public from potential dangers posed by non-compliant vehicles.

In light of these concerns, it is essential for all vehicle owners to adhere to the regulations outlined in the Traffic Act and ensure that their vehicles are equipped with authorized safety and emergency equipment. By following these guidelines, road users can contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone on the road.

Furthermore, it is crucial for drivers to be aware of the laws and regulations regarding the use of sirens and emergency lights on vehicles to avoid legal consequences and ensure the safety of themselves and others. The police will continue to enforce these regulations to maintain order on the roads and protect the well-being of all road users.
