A tragic incident occurred at the Kamukunji Police Station on Sunday night when a police officer was swept away by floods while rescuing pedestrians. The officer had bravely rescued four people, including three women and a child, who were trapped between a slab connecting their stalls and the pedestrian walkway. After successfully rescuing them, he went back to secure the stalls. Unfortunately, the slab caved in, leading to the officer being swept away by the raging waters. The police report also mentioned that the officer’s rifle (AK47) was loaded with ammunition and was also swept away by the floods.
Nairobi Police Boss Adamson Bungei confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing, but the officer’s body is yet to be recovered, and the rifle remains missing. In addition to this tragic event, three other individuals lost their lives due to the heavy downpour in separate incidents across the city. Two boda boda riders in the Eastlands area were among the casualties.
The heavy rainfall also caused chaos on the roads, leading to massive traffic congestion on major thoroughfares such as Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Lang’ata Road, and the Nairobi CBD. The Kenya Railways service also experienced disruptions in its services due to the relentless rain.
The flooding not only impacted transportation but also posed a significant threat to public safety. Images of floods on Nairobi Expressway and a submerged car painted a grim picture of the situation. The city was grappling with the aftermath of the intense rainfall, with authorities and emergency services working tirelessly to mitigate the effects of the floods.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by natural disasters and the importance of being prepared for such emergencies. It also highlights the bravery and selflessness of first responders, like the police officer who tragically lost his life while trying to save others. As the city mourns the loss of lives and assesses the damage caused by the floods, it is crucial to prioritize safety measures and emergency preparedness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
