The County Assembly grounds in Murang’a were thrown into chaos on Tuesday as police were called in to intervene. The altercation started between two opposing sides of the Assembly for reasons that remain unknown. The situation escalated quickly, with residents outside the chambers forced to call local authorities to separate the fighting politicians.

In a video recorded at the scene, the politicians could be heard screaming and wailing in what appeared to be a massive fight. Property of unknown value was destroyed as the altercation escalated, with MCAs hurling chairs and tables at each other. A door was left unhinged from the house entrance as members ran out screaming and shoving each other. The situation reached a boiling point with several politicians inside fighting before the police finally intervened.

This incident is not an isolated one, as in recent times there have been more than three recorded instances of MCAs engaging in physical altercations inside the Assembly. For example, on February 21, proceedings at the Laikipia County Assembly came to a halt after a brawl between two opposing sides over plans to oust Minority Leader Sammy Lekopien Parletto. The fight even led to a physical duel between the Speaker and his deputy.

Similarly, on March 14, Kakamega MCAs got into an altercation over attempts to effect house party leadership changes, meeting strong opposition from the opposing side. And on April 2, UDA Party MCAs in Baringo Assembly heckled the Speaker as he tried to read new changes to the party’s House leadership, leading to a disruptive confrontation.

The recurring theme of violence and chaos within County Assemblies is alarming and raises questions about the level of maturity and professionalism among elected leaders. These incidents not only disrupt the normal functioning of government but also reflect poorly on the democratic process as a whole.

Efforts must be made to address the root causes of these conflicts and to instill a sense of decorum and respect among MCAs. Training on conflict resolution, communication, and teamwork could help prevent future altercations and ensure that County Assemblies operate smoothly and effectively.

In conclusion, the recent incident in Murang’a County Assembly is a stark reminder of the need for political leaders to uphold democratic values and conduct themselves with dignity and respect. Only through peaceful and constructive dialogue can meaningful progress be achieved for the benefit of all residents.
