The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has issued a warning to Kenyans regarding the purchase of Benylin pediatric 100mls cough syrup Batch No 329304. This caution comes after the product, which is manufactured in South Africa, was recalled by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria.
Benylin pediatric syrup is a cough suppressant that is designed to reduce the feeling of needing to cough. However, the PPB has revealed that the product was recalled due to quality concerns related to an unacceptably high level of diethylene glycol, a contaminant that is toxic to humans and can potentially lead to serious health issues, including death.
The toxic effects of diethylene glycol can manifest in symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state, and acute kidney injury. These effects can be severe and may ultimately result in death if the contaminated product is consumed.
In response to the recall, the PPB has initiated investigations into the supply of the drug and has begun sampling the drug’s batches. Regulatory actions will be taken based on the findings of these laboratory tests to ensure the safety of consumers.
The PPB’s statement regarding the recall highlights the importance of safeguarding public health by identifying and addressing potentially harmful products in the market. By taking proactive measures to investigate and respond to quality concerns, regulatory authorities can prevent the distribution and sale of products that pose a risk to consumers.
Consumers are urged to be vigilant and avoid purchasing or using Benylin pediatric cough syrup with Batch No 329304 until further information is provided by the PPB. It is crucial for individuals to prioritize their health and safety by heeding warnings from regulatory agencies and taking appropriate precautions when using medication or healthcare products.
As the PPB continues its investigation and monitoring of the situation, more information will be shared with the public to ensure that consumers are informed and protected from potential harm. In the meantime, it is essential for individuals to exercise caution and follow the guidance provided by regulatory authorities to avoid any risks associated with the recalled product.
