A conductor from Metro Trans Sacco found himself in a heated altercation with a passenger on Wednesday, March 20. The incident was sparked when the passenger allegedly reversed a mobile money transaction after paying the fare. The confrontation escalated when the passenger refused to show the confirmation message to the conductor, insisting that he had already made the payment under the name “Brian.”
The conductor, on the other hand, claimed that he had not received any message confirming the payment. The situation took a turn when the passenger became defensive, accusing the conductor of attempting to tamper with his phone. This led to a standoff where the passenger adamantly refused to cooperate, sparking suspicions of fraudulent behavior by the conductor.
As tensions rose, the passenger challenged the conductor, daring him to involve the Central Police Station if he believed he was in the wrong. The conductor, determined to resolve the issue, demanded to see the payment message, pointing out that all other passengers had complied with the process. However, the passenger continued to evade providing the necessary evidence, raising further concerns about his intentions.
Frustrated by the passenger’s refusal to cooperate, the conductor resorted to physical means by grabbing him by the neck, igniting a scuffle between the two. Other passengers intervened to assist the conductor in handling the disruptive passenger. Eventually, the other passengers grew impatient with the situation and demanded that the passenger either pay the fare or exit the vehicle immediately.
It was later revealed that the passenger had indeed made the payment but had deceitfully reversed the transaction to avoid paying. The Sacco’s manager confirmed that the conductor would be required to provide a detailed report of the incident at the office on Friday, March 22.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by public transport operators in dealing with fare evasion and fraudulent activities. It also highlights the importance of cooperation and transparency between passengers and conductors to ensure a smooth and efficient commuting experience for all.
