Siaya Governor James Orengo has expressed utmost confidence in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s ability to maintain unity and strength, even in the face of the imminent departure of its leader Raila Odinga, who is vying for the Chairmanship position at the African Union Commission (AUC).

In his support for Raila’s bid for the AU top job, Orengo highlighted the solid foundation and enduring history of the opposition party, emphasizing that ODM will continue to be a progressive movement championing freedom, justice, democracy, and the rule of law.

While there are concerns that Raila’s involvement in Kenyan politics may decrease if he succeeds in his bid for the AU position, Orengo assured supporters that this should not be a cause for worry. He reiterated that Raila, as a patriot and citizen, will still be able to contribute to Kenyan affairs, despite the neutrality required by his new role.

Raila officially announced his candidacy for the AU Chairmanship on February 15, 2024, with the endorsement of former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo. This move kickstarted Kenya’s campaign to lead the continental organization, with Governor Orengo highlighting Raila’s exceptional credentials and qualifications for the role.

According to Orengo, Raila is the most suitable candidate to become the fifth Chairperson of the AU, with the ability to advance peace among African nations, transform boundaries into bridges for opportunities, and advocate for Africa’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.

The elections for the African Union Commission Chairperson are set to take place in February 2025. The Chairperson serves a four-year term, with the possibility of one renewal.

In a show of support for Raila’s candidacy, Orengo emphasized the importance of having a leader of Raila’s caliber represent Africa on the global stage. He expressed confidence in Raila’s ability to navigate the complexities of the AU Commission while continuing to uphold and promote the interests of Kenya.

As the political landscape shifts with Raila’s potential new role on the continent, Orengo reassured ODM supporters that the party’s values and goals will remain steadfast. He believes that ODM will continue to play a crucial role in Kenya’s political landscape, irrespective of Raila’s possible new responsibilities at the AU.

In conclusion, Siaya Governor James Orengo’s unwavering support for Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission Chairmanship reflects a strong belief in the ODM party’s resilience and enduring legacy. Despite potential changes in Raila’s role, Orengo remains optimistic about the party’s future and its ability to maintain its commitment to progressive ideals and democratic values.
