Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) secretary general, Edwin Sifuna, addressed allegations of a succession battle within the party, asserting that there was no such internal struggle aimed at replacing Raila Odinga as the party leader. Sifuna emphasized that the party remained unified and focused, despite Raila’s potential bid for the African Union Commission chairperson role.

Sifuna reassured members that the party’s operations would not be disrupted, and any potential changes in leadership would be communicated transparently. He stated, “These virtues form the basis upon which any succession or filling of vacant leadership positions is conducted. If a time ever comes for transitions within the party’s leadership, we will make it public.”

In response to what he deemed as false and skewed media analysis, Sifuna urged the media to refrain from peddling narratives that could incite division within the party. He emphasized that the perceived factional fights within the party were based on nonexistent vacancies and cautioned party members against falling for misleading narratives.

The secretary general highlighted ODM’s ongoing efforts in conducting a nationwide membership drive ahead of grassroots elections, underscoring the party’s commitment to its mandate as the “people’s watchman.” He urged the media to prioritize truth over sensationalism, especially concerning Rt Hon Odinga.

On February 15, Raila Odinga publicly announced his interest in the AU Commission chairman role, positioning himself as the right candidate to succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat, whose term ends this year. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo endorsed Odinga’s bid and called on other African leaders to support him.

In response, the ODM party convened a meeting to formally endorse its leader for the top AU job. Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed revealed that the party would strategize on advancing its agenda with Raila still at the helm.

Sifuna’s statement and the party’s actions aimed to dispel any rumors of infighting and division within ODM, presenting a united front and a clear focus on supporting Raila Odinga’s bid for the AU Commission chairmanship. The party remained steadfast in its commitment to serving the masses and upholding its role as a key player in Kenyan politics.
