The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recently issued guidelines to schools regarding the transportation of students for the upcoming Easter holiday. In a statement dated Friday, March 29, the NTSA directed schools planning to transport students using their buses to ensure they have the necessary documentation before starting the exercise. This includes possessing a valid Road Service License (RSL) and a valid inspection certificate.
Furthermore, school buses are required to be equipped with a speed limiter, similar to Public Service Vehicles (PSVs). Additionally, schools must ensure that their drivers have the appropriate driver’s license and a valid PSV badge in order to comply with the regulations set by the NTSA.
The statement emphasized that school transport, like all other PSVs, must adhere to these requirements for the safety of the passengers. It urged all schools to ensure compliance with traffic rules and regulations to avoid any untoward incidents during the holiday season.
The timing of this directive is crucial as schools are approaching the end of the first term, with the calendar indicating that schools will close on April 5 and reopen for the second term on Tuesday, April 29. The government has also heightened crackdowns on major roads due to the recent upsurge in road accidents, some of which have involved school buses resulting in tragic outcomes for students.
As the Easter holidays approach, motorists are reminded to observe traffic rules and exercise caution, especially since many Kenyans will be traveling to reunite with their families during this period. This is essential to ensure the safety of all road users and prevent any unnecessary accidents.
Recent incidents, such as the one involving a Moi University bus in Kimende on March 27, serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations and maintaining vigilance on the roads. The NTSA’s guidelines are aimed at promoting road safety and minimizing risks during the holiday season, and it is crucial for schools and drivers to comply with these directives for the well-being of all passengers.
