The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced plans to conduct random drunk driving tests on major highways and roads in the country. This exercise will be carried out in collaboration with officers from the National Police Service (NPS). Along with drunk driving tests, the enforcement agencies will also focus on speed limits, driving licenses, and overloading of vehicles.
The joint operation aims to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with regulations. The statement issued by NTSA highlighted the importance of monitoring speed, verifying the validity of documentation, conducting random tests for drunk driving, cracking down on overloaded vehicles, and addressing other road safety issues.
In response to the onset of the long rainy season, NTSA has issued seven cautionary measures for road users. Motorists are advised to be cautious of their speed, as road surfaces can become slippery with the first rains after a dry spell. The accumulation of dirt, soil, and oil deposits on the road can lead to slippery surfaces, making stopping more difficult and increasing the risk of losing control.
The advisory also cautions against driving through flash floods, flooded roads, and riverbeds. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, exercise caution, and responsibly address any dangerous situations on the road. Pedestrians are reminded to be vigilant of their surroundings, while motorists with stalled vehicles are advised to remove them promptly.
The seven advisories issued by NTSA during the rainy season include:
1. Removal of stalled vehicles as soon as possible
2. Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
3. Turning on headlights for increased visibility
4. Being aware of potential water-related brake issues and driving slowly to dry the brakes
5. Keeping both hands on the steering wheel for full control
6. Checking and replacing worn-out tires
7. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists advised to wear bright clothing or reflector vests for visibility
As road safety remains a top priority, NTSA and NPS officers will continue to monitor compliance with regulations and conduct enforcement activities on major highways. By promoting responsible driving behavior and adherence to road safety guidelines, the authorities aim to reduce road accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
