Nine police officers were injured on Saturday, March 9, after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated near the Welmerer area in Garissa. The attack occurred at around 5:30 am, causing significant damage to two armoured police vehicles and injuring the officers inside.
The injuries sustained by the police officers were varied, with major and minor injuries to different parts of their bodies. Four officers suffered major injuries to the neck and arms, with one of them breaking both legs in the explosion. The other five officers sustained minor injuries to their hands and legs, with one also receiving a head injury. All the officers have since been treated by medical officers at a nearby camp and discharged.
In response to the attack, a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) has been deployed in the area to pursue the militants responsible for the attack and enhance security in the region. This swift response aims to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of both the officers and the local community.
Prior to this attack, police officers had already been proactive in their efforts to combat militant activities in the area. On March 2, officers recovered multiple IEDs, funds, and other explosives based on a tip from the public regarding terrorist activities in the Fafi area of Garissa. The successful operation led to the apprehension of several suspected al-Shabaab militants, with five of them being shot dead during the operation.
The intelligence-led operation was a result of effective collaboration between law enforcement officials and members of the public, highlighting the importance of community involvement in maintaining security. The recovery of mobile phones and SIM cards during the operation further demonstrates the meticulous approach taken by the officers to gather evidence and disrupt terrorist activities in the region.
Incidents like these underscore the constant threat posed by militant groups and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to protect civilians and uphold security. The bravery and resilience displayed by the injured officers in the face of danger reflect their commitment to service and the sacrifices they make to safeguard their communities.
As investigations into the recent attack continue and efforts to counter extremist activities persist, it is crucial for authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing security challenges. By working together with local communities and utilizing intelligence-led operations, law enforcement agencies can effectively combat terrorism and maintain peace and stability in the region.
