Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya expressed his dismay at the disruption that occurred during the burial ceremony of one of his employees on Friday, March 22. The chaos unfolded when several buses arrived at the burial site, bringing unidentified individuals from Bungoma. Governor Natembeya was particularly disappointed with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, as he had failed to follow protocol by informing him of his intention to attend the burial.
In an attempt to calm the situation, Governor Natembeya stated that he tried to control the youth at the burial site, only to be met with tear gas being deployed. He mentioned that he had received a warning the day before the burial not to attend, as there were suspicions that buses had been hired to ferry people from Bungoma for the event. Upon arriving, he observed a heavy police presence surrounding Speaker Wetangula, which agitated the youths present.
Governor Natembeya has called for an investigation to identify the individual responsible for ordering the use of tear gas against him and the gathered youths, deeming it illegal. He emphasized the presence of elderly individuals and women at the burial, emphasizing the need for accountability. However, Ford Kenya Deputy party leader Ferdinand Wanyonyi criticized Governor Natembeya’s handling of the situation, arguing that he should have heeded the warning and stayed away from the burial.
The chaotic scenes at the burial site in Goseta, Trans Nzoia County, on March 22 saw supporters of Speaker Wetangula and Governor Natembaya clash, leading to the intervention of the police who used tear gas to disperse the rowdy crowd. The tense situation escalated quickly, prompting calls for restraint and peaceful resolution.
Governor Natembeya’s plea for justice in the face of the tear gas incident highlights the need for accountability and adherence to peaceful protocols in public gatherings. The failure to communicate and coordinate effectively between political figures and security forces can result in unnecessary confrontations and endanger the safety of innocent bystanders.
Moving forward, it is imperative for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for established protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. By fostering a culture of mutual understanding and collaboration, conflicts can be resolved peacefully, preserving the dignity and safety of all individuals involved. Ultimately, unity and cooperation are key to maintaining peace and stability in communities, ensuring that public events can proceed without fear or aggression.
