On February 28, the Nairobi County Government made a significant announcement regarding the commencement of mass water disconnections across the capital city. The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC), which is responsible for providing and managing water and sewerage services in Nairobi, revealed that this action was necessary due to the accumulation of pending bills.
Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration emphasized that the drastic measure of mass water disconnections was taken as a result of a substantial amount of overdue water bills. Nairobi residents were warned to clear their outstanding water bills to avoid service interruptions. Images captured by Kenyans.co.ke showed Nairobi Water staff cutting off water supply in various parts of the city where the disconnections were taking place.
Those affected by the disconnections were advised to dial *888# and follow the prompts to settle their overdue bills. The mass disconnections were projected to impact thousands of households in Nairobi, as well as parts of Kiambu and Kajiado counties. NCWSC reported that 76% of households in Nairobi have access to the county-provided water connection, equating to a population of nearly six million individuals reliant on the county for clean water for domestic purposes.
Although NCWSC manages the water provision and billing process, the development of water infrastructure is overseen by the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA). The timing of the water disconnections coincided with an increase in water prices for Nairobi residents, a decision made in response to the National Government’s announcement to impose charges on Nairobi County for the water it supplies to its residents in June 2023.
The mass water disconnections in Nairobi serve as a reminder of the importance of prompt bill payment to avoid service disruptions. With such a large population relying on the county for water supply, it is crucial for residents to ensure that their bills are settled on time to maintain uninterrupted access to this essential resource. The issue also highlights the intricate relationship between various government bodies involved in providing and managing water services in the region.
As water is a fundamental necessity for daily life, the ongoing developments in Nairobi regarding water disconnections and billing serve as a call to action for residents to stay informed and proactive in managing their water consumption and payments. Adhering to timely bill payments not only ensures uninterrupted water supply but also supports the sustainable management of water resources in the region.
