An ambulance belonging to the Murang’a County Government met a tragic fate on Wednesday, March 20, as it plunged into a river in the region. Reports indicated that the ambulance was traveling from Thika in Kiambu County at the time of the accident. The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) commented on the incident, attributing the crash to the driver losing control, which led to the unfortunate event.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported during the incident, and a tow truck was promptly dispatched to retrieve the ambulance from the river. It was not immediately confirmed if there were any patients in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Sadly, this incident added to the recent spate of fatal accidents in Kenya, with over five occurring in less than four days. Careless driving, unroadworthy cars, and poor road conditions have been identified as contributing factors to these tragedies.

In response to the rising number of road accidents, Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has called for mandatory physical and medical testing of all Kenyan drivers. Those who fail or refuse to undergo these tests will not be issued a driving license by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). The urgency to address road safety issues was emphasized after a devastating accident involving a Kenyatta University bus in Voi, Taita Taveta County, claimed the lives of 11 students on March 19.

This incident occurred concurrently with another fatal accident in Bomet and a day after a school bus carrying students from Kapsabet High School lost control, resulting in the death of a student and a teacher. These tragic events have highlighted the need for stricter measures to prevent road accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.

The series of accidents serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving, vehicle maintenance, and proper road infrastructure. It underscores the need for concerted efforts from both authorities and motorists to uphold safety standards and prevent avoidable tragedies on the roads. As the nation mourns the loss of lives in these accidents, it is imperative for all stakeholders to work together towards creating a safer road environment for everyone.
