Several people are feared dead after a tragic road accident involving four vehicles occurred between the Salama area and Sultan Hamud along Mombasa Road. The vehicles involved in the collision were an 18-seater matatu, a trailer, a lorry, and another Public Service Vehicle (PSV).
Paul Musila, the Makueni County Health CECM, confirmed the incident to Kenyans.co.ke and stated that seven individuals had been rushed to Sultan Hamud sub-county hospital. However, he did not provide details on the number of fatalities resulting from the accident.
Eyewitnesses at the scene immediately sprang into action to assist in rescuing survivors. Musila reported, “Seven individuals with injuries have been taken to Sultan Hamud Hospital at 10:00 pm,” promising to provide more details on the casualties later. At the time of reporting, Makueni County Ambulance had arrived at the scene to help in rescuing those trapped in the wreckage.
The accident led to a traffic congestion, with motorists approaching the area being directed to seek alternative routes. The locals called upon Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen to intervene and address the increasing number of road accidents in the region.
The most recent data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that 1,090 fatalities were recorded between January 1, 2024, and March 24, 2024. Passengers accounted for the highest number of deaths, with 403 casualties, followed by 260 motorcyclists, 92 pillion passengers, and 84 drivers losing their lives.
This incident occurred amidst an ongoing crackdown by NTSA officials and police officers on major highways to enforce traffic regulations. NTSA safety compliance checks were conducted at Kariene, Meru/Nkubu Road on March 31, 2024, as part of the efforts to ensure road safety and reduce accidents.
