Raila Odinga, Kenya’s candidate for the African Union (AU) Executive Council, has received glowing praise from Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS, Musalia Mudavadi. Following a historic vote in Addis Ababa on March 15, Mudavadi expressed strong support for Raila’s bid to lead the continent, citing a strong synergy and emphasizing Raila’s credibility.

In an interview, Mudavadi commended Raila for his extensive experience in public office, particularly noting his tenure as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. He highlighted Raila’s Pan-African credentials and his ability to promote unity in challenging circumstances.

Mudavadi underscored Raila’s potential to address critical issues facing Africa, such as conflict resolution, food insecurity, and economic integration. He emphasized Raila’s capacity to bring people together and reconcile differences, making him a suitable candidate to tackle the challenges in the African continent.

The endorsement from Mudavadi comes as Kenya gears up to launch a continental campaign for Raila, following the AU Executive Council’s decision to drop two key proposals that could have impeded Raila’s candidacy. The Council no longer insists on the next AU Commission Chairperson being a woman or mandates a specific region for the chairperson, providing greater flexibility for Kenya’s bid.

Mudavadi hailed the Council’s unanimous affirmation of the Eastern Africa region’s right to nominate the next AU Commission Chairperson, describing it as a major breakthrough. However, the decision awaits approval by the Assembly, consisting of the heads of state and government of the 55-member bloc, before becoming official regulation.

Regarding Raila’s candidacy, Mudavadi expressed confidence that there are no longer any technical or legal obstacles hindering Kenya from submitting its candidate, setting a clear path forward for Raila. Under the revised rules, only the Northern Africa region will nominate candidates for the Deputy Chairperson position, while other regions will compete for the positions of commissioners.

Mudavadi outlined the upcoming steps in Raila’s journey, including the formal submission of paperwork, regional lobbying efforts, and presenting Raila’s credentials to the African continent. He also highlighted Kenya’s broader engagement in African affairs, pointing out President William Ruto’s active involvement in issues like climate change, financial reform, and enhancing Africa’s global influence.

Ruto’s nomination by African heads of state to lead further reforms within the AU showcases Kenya’s dedication to advancing the continent’s interests. With the support of Mudavadi and the revised AU rules, Raila Odinga is positioned to enter the race for the AU Commission Chairperson, representing Kenya’s aspiration to lead Africa towards a brighter future.
