The Cohesion Committee of the National Assembly has put forward a series of proposals to enhance security in the North Rift region, which has been experiencing an increase in banditry incidents. The Committee, during a meeting held in Machakos County on April 12, suggested the establishment of a dedicated ministry for North Rift affairs and the use of special guns to combat banditry.
The MPs emphasized the need for a specialized ministry similar to the Ministry of Karamoja Affairs in Uganda, citing it as a successful model in addressing security challenges in specific regions. They believe that the new ministry would play a crucial role in addressing the marginalization of the North Rift area. This proposal aims to streamline efforts in tackling security issues and promoting development in the region.
In addition to the proposal for a new ministry, the Committee recommended the use of G3 guns by the police and National Police Reservists (NPRs) engaged in security operations in the North Rift. The deployment of these special guns is intended to help security agencies differentiate between legal and illegal firearms in the area, as some of the bandits use AK-47s, which are also issued to officers.
The MPs also called for the establishment of a compensation fund for victims affected by bandit attacks, as well as legislation to protect and enhance the capabilities of the National Police Reservists Unit. They stressed the importance of clearly defined borders and increased government investment in education to address the root causes of insecurity in the region.
Over the years, the North Rift region has faced significant challenges with violence, leading to the initiation of Operation Maliza Uhalifu in 2023 by the government. This operation involves collaboration between the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the police to address the security issues in the area.
The proposals put forward by the Cohesion Committee highlight the urgent need for comprehensive security measures in the North Rift region. By addressing the underlying causes of insecurity, enhancing law enforcement capabilities, and promoting development, the Committee aims to create a safer and more stable environment for the residents of the North Rift.
