Relatives, friends, and fellow athletes gathered on Friday to bid a final farewell to Kenyan marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident last Sunday. Mourners lined up to pay their respects to Kiptum, passing by his casket and signing a memorial book at the funeral service held at Chepkoriro Show Ground.

One of the attendees, Faith Kipyegon, the current world record holder for the 1500 meters, shared fond memories of Kiptum. She recalled their meeting in Monaco where they shared smiles and laughter, making the news of his passing all the more heartbreaking. Kiptum and his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, lost their lives in a crash near the town of Kaptagat, a popular high-altitude training area for elite distance runners.

Kiptum had quickly risen to prominence in road running, setting the world record in only his third elite marathon appearance at the Chicago Marathon last year. The record was officially recognized by World Athletics just days before his untimely death. Catherine Ndereva, a former marathoner, expressed her deep sorrow over his passing, noting that Kiptum’s absence would be felt at future champion events.

The funeral service was attended by dignitaries including Kenyan President William Ruto and Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations. Following the service, Kiptum was laid to rest at his farm in Naiberi, located approximately 20km from Eldoret.

The loss of Kelvin Kiptum has left a void in the world of marathon running, with many paying tribute to his talent and promising future. His legacy as a world record holder and rising star in the sport will live on in the hearts and memories of those who knew him. May he rest in peace, knowing that he was beloved by many and that his contributions to the running community will not be forgotten.
