Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir delivered a passionate speech on Saturday, criticizing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for the government’s failure to arrest drug barons in the county. During an official function, Governor Nassir expressed frustration over the government’s inability to apprehend these criminals within the 4-day ultimatum set by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.
Governor Nassir questioned why Deputy President Gachagua was unable to take decisive action against the drug barons, accusing him of manipulating the emotions of residents. He emphasized that the government possesses all the necessary resources and intelligence to carry out these arrests promptly.
In his address, Governor Nassir called out the government for prioritizing the dispersal of protesting doctors with tear gas instead of focusing on capturing the drug traffickers. He urged the authorities to stop making empty promises and take concrete actions to address the longstanding issue of drug trafficking in Mombasa. Governor Nassir boldly challenged the government to either make arrests swiftly or allow the county government to intervene and tackle the problem independently.
The governor highlighted the importance of preventing drug use and dismantling the supply chain to effectively combat the drug menace in the region. Nassir stressed the need for immediate action, insisting that the time for mere notices and warnings had long passed. He proposed collaborating with the elected Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to establish a dedicated task force to address the drug problem if the government failed to act decisively.
Governor Nassir urged law enforcement officials to arrest the perpetrators promptly and publicly parade them to expose their identities to the community. He dismissed any attempts at deception or delay, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
The governor’s remarks came in response to comments made by Deputy President Gachagua and other government officials at a stakeholder meeting in Mombasa. Gachagua criticized local leaders for their absence from the meeting, suggesting that they were intimidated by the drug barons. He emphasized the importance of unity among elected leaders in combating the drug trade.
Meanwhile, Inspector General Koome had issued a directive for his officers to arrest the drug barons within four days. He also proposed lifting the use of face masks in court to publicly shame the criminals involved in drug trafficking.
Overall, Governor Nassir’s speech shed light on the pressing issue of drug trafficking in Mombasa and called for immediate and decisive action from the government. His passionate plea for accountability and transparency resonated with residents, urging authorities to prioritize the safety and well-being of the community.
