The County Government of Mombasa has issued a directive for 15 individuals residing in government-owned houses to vacate the premises. This decision was made through a Gazette Notice dated February 13 but was officially released on a Saturday. The notice declared the sub-leases of the land on which the houses are built null and void. The County Government of Mombasa cautioned the public against engaging in any transactions related to the parcels of land in question, as they have been rendered invalid.

The notice, signed by County Secretary Jeizan Faruk, specified that the affected parcels range in size from 0.023 acres to 0.3 acres. This action by the Mombasa County Land Formalization and Regularization Committee comes in the wake of a similar directive issued by Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga in Nairobi. Hinga had directed individuals residing in government houses in six Nairobi Estates, including Jogoo Road Phase I & II, Jamaa, Mbotela, Ahero, and Mawenzi Garden, to vacate by April 30.

This decision was made in alignment with the Affordable Housing Program (AHP), part of President William Ruto’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). The Affordable Housing project aims to provide affordable housing units to Kenyans and create job opportunities. The directive to vacate the government-owned houses in Mombasa and Nairobi is to pave the way for the redevelopment of these estates and increase rental stock for citizens at affordable rates.

President Ruto’s goal is to deliver over 200,000 affordable housing units annually to meet the growing housing demand among Kenyans. Construction of 36,092 units had already commenced as of August last year, with the successful completion and handover of the affordable Buxton Estate housing project. Additionally, the Bondeni Affordable Housing Project in Nakuru County has also begun construction, showcasing the government’s commitment to providing quality and affordable housing solutions.

The government’s focus on affordable housing aims to address the housing deficit in Kenya and uplift the living standards of its citizens. By redeveloping government-owned estates and providing affordable housing options, the government is working towards achieving its goal of ensuring every Kenyan has access to decent and affordable housing. The recent directives in Mombasa and Nairobi reflect the government’s commitment to housing development and urban renewal initiatives that benefit the citizens and contribute to the economic growth of the country.
