Kenyans were left shocked on Sunday, March 10, when a video surfaced showing residents from a Nairobi estate physically confronting Nairobi City Council officers, commonly known as “kanjos.” The incident occurred after the officers had confiscated some items, including plywood, which appeared to be from a local hardware store. This action led to a heated altercation between the officers and the residents.

The video captured a resident dragging the confiscated materials from the officers’ pick-up truck, which attracted the attention of other residents and bystanders. In another scene, a resident was seen holding a hammer and engaging in a verbal altercation with one of the “kanjos” before slapping him. Onlookers were heard inciting others, accusing the officers of not respecting the businesses of local residents.

Witnesses reported hearing shouts from the residents, demanding that the officers leave the young man alone as they had remained silent for too long. Some residents even confronted the officers who were trying to walk away from the escalating situation. However, the angry crowd followed the officers as they attempted to avoid further confrontation by driving away in their pickup truck. Several locals jumped onto the vehicle, while others ran after it, shouting and throwing stones.

In the aftermath of the incident, Kenyans took to social media to condemn the behavior of the officers and called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to intervene. Many cautioned against individuals taking matters into their own hands, while others commended the residents for standing up against alleged mistreatment and harassment by the enforcement officers.

Incidents of Kenyans retaliating against “kanjos” have become increasingly common in recent years. Last year, enforcement officers carrying out an operation in the Nairobi Business District faced backlash from city residents after vandalizing and confiscating trolleys used by street vendors. Another video went viral showing a “kanjo” officer forcefully entering a female motorist’s car attempting to park, further sparking outrage against the Nairobi County Government.

The recurring confrontations between Nairobi residents and city authorities highlight a growing frustration among citizens over what they perceive as unjust treatment and harassment by enforcement officers. The incidents serve as a reminder of the need for improved relations between government authorities and the public, as well as the importance of addressing grievances through proper channels rather than resorting to violence.
