The tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, along the Meru-Nairobi Highway has left Meru County Deputy Speaker Mwenda Ali and his family devastated. Ali’s six-year-old daughter lost her life in a road accident that involved his vehicle, a Subaru, which burst into flames after colliding with a Toyota Double Cabin in Embu.
Eyewitnesses who rushed to the scene upon hearing a loud bang found the Deputy Speaker’s vehicle engulfed in flames. Despite their efforts to rescue the young girl, the intense fire made it impossible to reach her in time. The locals in the area were left helpless as they watched the horrifying scene unfold before their eyes.
Ali, who was in the front passenger seat at the time of the accident, sustained severe injuries, including a deep cut on his forehead and a dislocated left knee. He, along with his driver and another passenger, were promptly taken to Ena Hospital for treatment. However, due to the worsening condition of their injuries, they were later airlifted to Nairobi for further medical attention.
The police arrived at the scene to conduct investigations and determine the cause of the accident. This unfortunate event once again brought to light the escalating number of road accidents in the region. Just a day prior, two separate accidents had claimed a total of 11 lives, further emphasizing the urgent need for road safety measures and awareness.
One of the accidents involved a tragic collision of five vehicles on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, resulting in the loss of ten lives. In a separate incident, a bus carrying students from Chavakali Boys High School overturned at Mamboleo Junction in Kisumu, leading to the death of one student. The injured students were quickly transported to Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical treatment.
