The tragic death of Angata Nanyekie Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Paul Leshimpriro has left his family in mourning. The politician was shot and killed by bandits while he was heading home along the Morijo-Baragoi Road in Samburu County. This unfortunate incident occurred on a Sunday morning as Leshimpriro was returning home from Maralal Town. He was in the car with his driver when the vehicle was ambushed at Soit Pus. Thankfully, the driver managed to escape unharmed.
This heartbreaking event comes just two weeks after bandits engaged in a shootout against police reservists in Samburu, resulting in the death of one individual. On January 30, the bandits disrupted the burial ceremony of a National Police Reservist who had previously been killed in another shooting. The armed assailants infiltrated the funeral venue and opened fire, causing chaos and panic among the mourners. Tragically, one person lost their life during the exchange, leading to the suspension of the event.
Following this attack, former Agriculture Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe called on the government to prioritize the safety and protection of National Police Reservists. He expressed his intent to take legal action on behalf of those who have lost their lives due to the government’s failure to safeguard them. Additionally, during this time, bandits targeted the home of Richard Lesiyampe, where several residents sought refuge for their livestock under the assumption that it was a safer environment.
The government had been actively involved in combating banditry in various Rift Valley counties, including Elegeyo Marakwet, Samburu, Turkana, and Baringo, among others. Despite these efforts, the persistent threat posed by bandits continues to claim innocent lives and disrupt the peace and security of the affected communities.
It is essential for authorities to prioritize the safety and protection of all individuals, including politicians, police reservists, and civilians, in order to prevent further tragedies like the untimely death of MCA Paul Leshimpriro. The community mourns his loss and calls for justice to be served for those who have been affected by such senseless violence. May his soul rest in peace as his loved ones navigate through this difficult time of grief and sorrow.
