Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has set his sights on a new political venture, announcing his ambition to succeed Moussa Faki as the African Union Commission Chairperson in 2025. This move has not only received backing from international leaders such as former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo but has also garnered support locally from diverse quarters including the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

While Raila’s bid for the top AU job has gained widespread support, he must also meet specific requirements set by the AU should he formally place his bid. These requirements include a Master’s Degree in fields such as Law, International Relations, Economics, Diplomacy, Management, Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences, or a closely related field from a recognized institution. Additionally, a PhD in the same field is considered an added advantage for interested candidates.

Raila’s educational background includes an MSc (Master of Science) in Mechanical Engineering from Germany; however, he will need to meet the AU’s educational criteria to be considered for the position. Furthermore, the selection committee will require him to demonstrate 20 years of relevant professional and international experience, with at least ten years served in a progressively senior leadership role(s) preferably in an intergovernmental organization or national government/public service, international or regional institution.

In terms of languages, Raila must demonstrate proficiency in one of the AU working languages, with proficiency in another AU working language highly desirable. The official languages of the AU are Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, and any other African language. Raila is fluent in both Kiswahili and English, which aligns with the language requirements set by the AU.

Moreover, Raila will also need to demonstrate transformational leadership experience with a strategic vision and proven skills in managing complex organizations at the national, regional, or international level. He must also showcase a record of setting clear standards for accountability, probity, value for money, risk management, and zero tolerance to fraud and corruption to meet the required skills set by the AU.

However, Raila’s announcement has ignited excitement and curiosity about his potential presidency at the AU, especially considering his extensive political experience and influence on the African continent. If successful in his bid, Raila’s presidency at the African Union could potentially reshape and redefine the organization’s leadership and direction. As Raila continues to garner support for his bid, it remains to be seen how his candidacy will be received by the AU and the international community.

In conclusion, Raila Odinga’s announcement of his ambition to succeed Moussa Faki as the African Union Commission Chairperson in 2025 has sparked discussions and debates both locally and internationally. With endorsements from influential leaders and diverse support from various quarters, Raila’s bid for the top AU job has gained momentum. However, to formalize his bid, he must meet the educational, experience, language, and leadership skill requirements set by the AU. As the political landscape continues to evolve, all eyes will be on Raila as he navigates this new and significant phase of his political career.
