Godfrey Mapesa, a candidate for the Lumakanda Ward position in the 2022 general election, tragically lost his life on April 14 in a fatal accident. The news of his untimely demise was shared by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who disclosed that Mapesa was traveling in his personal vehicle when the accident occurred in the Mwamba area of Lugari, Kakamega County.

As details surrounding the accident remain limited, it is unclear whether Mapesa was the sole casualty in the morning incident. Mapesa, who had contested for the Lumakanda MCA seat on a UDA ticket but was defeated by the incumbent MCA Benard Wanyonyi Mulama Bokanda, was mourned by his political peers and community members. Bokanda, in particular, expressed his grief over the loss of Mapesa, describing him as a dynamic leader whose passing is a significant blow to the entire Luhya community.

“We, the people of Lumakanda Ward, have suffered a great loss. Rest in Peace, Brother, friend, and colleague,” Bokanda posted on his official social media platforms. Khalwale also extended his condolences, acknowledging the difficulty in accepting Mapesa’s sudden death and sending sympathies to Mapesa’s family, friends, and supporters.

Mapesa’s tragic accident comes in the wake of other fatal incidents involving police officers in the same region. Just days before Mapesa’s accident, a police officer lost his life in a collision with a trailer while riding a motorcycle in the Mwamba area. The officer, who was on annual leave at the time, was struck from behind by the trailer, resulting in his death. Furthermore, another police officer perished in a separate accident on the Marsabit-Moyale Highway when the vehicle he was in veered off the road and rolled multiple times before coming to a stop.

These series of accidents have heightened concerns about road safety in the region and highlighted the need for enhanced measures to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring. As the community mourns the loss of Godfrey Mapesa and the other victims of these unfortunate incidents, it serves as a reminder of the fragile nature of life and the importance of prioritizing safety on the roads. May their souls rest in peace.
