Delphina Wambui Ngigi, a widow and mother of four, had dreams of a better life for her children, which led her to relocate to Canada in February 2024. Unfortunately, her journey to a new beginning was cut short when she tragically passed away on February 18 after seeking asylum in the foreign country.
Before her death, Wambui faced numerous struggles and hardships. She lost her job and her father, prompting her decision to move to Canada in search of a brighter future for her family. After being granted a Visa, she meticulously prepared for her trip, including booking tickets and acquiring suitable clothing for the cold Canadian weather.
However, her journey was not without obstacles. During her initial attempt to travel on February 9, she was turned away at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on the grounds that she could not travel to Canada through Europe. Despite facing setbacks, she persisted and eventually managed to embark on her journey after multiple attempts.
Once in Canada, Wambui’s struggles continued as she found herself waiting in the cold outside a shelter home. Due to overcrowding at the shelter, she was asked to stay outside along with two others while waiting for space to become available. Despite the challenging circumstances, Wambui remained determined to make a fresh start in her new home.
Throughout her time at the shelter, Wambui stayed in touch with her friend and her children. In their last conversation, her friend advised her to ask for a place to freshen up at the shelter. Tragically, shortly after this conversation, Wambui’s friend received the devastating news of her passing.
The circumstances surrounding Wambui’s death remain unclear, with conflicting reports about whether she passed away in the ambulance or at the hospital. Her sudden demise has left her family and friends in shock and grief, with efforts underway to raise funds to bring her body back to Kenya.
Currently, a fundraising campaign is ongoing to raise Ksh5.8 million (USD40,000) for the repatriation of Wambui’s remains. The community has already contributed Ksh595,300 towards this cause, highlighting the outpouring of support for the grieving family.
The tragic story of Delphina Wambui Ngigi serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by asylum seekers and the importance of compassion and solidarity in times of need. Her untimely death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, and her legacy will undoubtedly live on in the memories of those she touched during her journey.
