The Kenya National Commission of Human Rights (KNCHR) has emphasized the importance of peacebuilding and reconciliation in the volatile West Pokot region following the tragic loss of late Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla and nine other soldiers. In a statement issued by KNCHR Chairperson Roseline Odede, the sacrifice made by General Ogolla and his fellow military officers should serve as a catalyst for ongoing efforts towards achieving peace in the area.

Described as a selfless leader dedicated to protecting the country and upholding peace and security, General Ogolla’s legacy is one that should inspire continued commitment to peacebuilding initiatives. A memorial service to honor General Ogolla is scheduled to take place on April 26 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, where his family shared that he found solace in his biweekly runs.

The memorial service comes five days after the scheduled burial of General Ogolla at his home in Mor, Alego, Siaya County on April 21. Interestingly, it was revealed that General Ogolla had left instructions in his will to be buried within 72 hours of his death, reflecting his strong sense of duty even in his final moments.

The state has taken charge of coordinating the memorial event for General Ogolla and the other fallen military officers who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Nairobi following the incident, prompting President William Ruto to declare three days of mourning in honor of General Ogolla and the nine other military personnel.

President Ruto also ordered the lowering of national, regional, and regimental flags to half-mast as a sign of respect for the fallen soldiers. He expressed his deep grief over the loss of General Ogolla, describing it as a painful personal loss. The President’s tribute to General Ogolla echoed the sentiments of many who recognized his dedication to serving his country and promoting peace in the region.

The upcoming memorial service for General Ogolla is expected to be a solemn occasion to pay tribute to his life and legacy. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel in their commitment to protecting their nation and fostering a peaceful environment for all citizens. As Kenya mourns the loss of General Ogolla and his comrades, there is a renewed call for unity, resilience, and a shared commitment to peacebuilding efforts in the West Pokot region and beyond.
