The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) recently issued orders for the removal of controversial content produced by artist Chris Embarambamba from various streaming platforms. The decision was made in response to inappropriate content being circulated online, including recorded religious performances by a preacher known as Bishop Johanna. Additionally, content by gospel artist William Getumbe was also flagged for removal.
In a statement released by KFCB, it was emphasized that the content creators were issued demand letters to remove any inappropriate material from their platforms. Failure to comply with these directives would result in legal action in accordance with the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya. The board also reached out to social media platforms to take down the controversial songs by Embarambamba and Getumbe.
KFCB CEO Nelly Muluka reiterated the importance of upholding moral standards in creative content, especially when it comes to religious influences that may mislead the public through indecent exposure performances. While the constitution grants freedom of creativity and expression, it should not be used to promote indecency or obscenity.
With students on midterm break, parents were urged to monitor their children’s online activities to prevent access to inappropriate content. The statement highlighted the need for responsible digital parenting to protect minors from harmful material on the internet.
In line with existing laws, content creators, particularly young individuals venturing into the creative industry, were reminded to produce material that respects Kenyan culture, moral values, and national aspirations. It is essential to ensure that minors are not exposed to harmful or offensive content through their work.
Kenyans were encouraged to report any obscene content they come across to the KFCB via email at [email protected]. This proactive approach aims to safeguard the public from exposure to inappropriate material and uphold moral standards in the digital space.
The government’s stance on regulating content creation and distribution aligns with efforts to maintain a healthy media environment that respects societal norms and values. Content creators, platforms, and parents all play a crucial role in ensuring that online content is both entertaining and responsible. Ultimately, the goal is to promote a safe and positive online experience for all users.
