The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning about the likelihood of gusty winds and flooding as heavy rainfall is projected to occur in the country within the next 48 hours. The statement, dated Tuesday, April 2, highlighted the potential for increased wind speeds during the heavy rainfall in various parts of Kenya. The department cautioned that these winds could result in the blowing off of roofs, destruction of structures, and uprooting of trees.
Areas expected to be affected by the heavy rainfall include Nairobi, counties surrounding Mt Kenya, and regions near Lake Victoria. The forecast suggests heavy rainfall exceeding 30mm in 24 hours in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. The intensity of the rainfall is expected to increase to over 40mm in 24 hours and expand to the Southeast Lowlands, coast, and northern sectors on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, before diminishing on Thursday, April 4, 2024. The period of heavy rainfall may also be accompanied by gusty winds.
Alongside the warning about gusty winds, Kenyans were urged to be cautious of potential flooding in their areas. Residents were advised to refrain from crossing flooded waters, as past incidents have seen individuals swept away during such occurrences. Furthermore, the cautionary notice advised against driving or walking through moving water, or sheltering under trees and near grilled windows to mitigate the risk of lightning strikes.
Various government agencies and emergency response teams were advised to stay informed about the weather patterns and prepare adequately to respond to any emergencies. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, there is a 33-66 per cent chance for the predicted weather patterns to materialize.
In light of the warnings issued, it is crucial for residents in the affected areas to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and that of their property. Being proactive in response to severe weather conditions is essential to minimize the potential risks associated with gusty winds, flooding, and heavy rainfall. Stay tuned to updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department for timely information and guidance on coping with the impending weather conditions.
