The Kenyan government has decided to halt its planned deployment of police officers to Haiti for a peacekeeping mission. This decision was announced by Korir Sing’oei, the Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs. The reason for this halt was the resignation of Haiti’s Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, on Monday.
Guyanese President Irfaan Ali, who also serves as the Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), confirmed Prime Minister Henry’s resignation. Henry had been absent from Haiti since February 2024, when he traveled to Kenya to finalize a reciprocal agreement with President William Ruto. President Ruto had agreed to deploy 1,000 police officers to Haiti, a nation that is largely under the control of gangs.
However, the escalation of violence in Haiti left Prime Minister Henry and other senior officials stranded in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. Despite this setback, Kenya remained committed to sending the 1,000 police officers to Haiti. PS Sing’oei stated that Kenya would wait for the installation of a new constitutional authority in Haiti before making any further decisions on the matter.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki had informed that the mission to deploy the UN-backed multinational mission to Haiti was in the pre-deployment stage. The decision to halt the deployment comes amidst criticism from some Kenyan citizens who questioned the government’s priorities in sending forces to tackle gangs in Haiti.
