Asenath Jeruto, the wife of World Record marathon holder Kelvin Kiptum, recently shared the heart-wrenching news that they were set to exchange their vows in a church ceremony this April before tragically losing her beloved partner. The emotional revelation came during the funeral service of the athlete in Elgeyo Marakwet on Friday, February 23. The couple, who had been married in a traditional ceremony in 2017, had planned to officially seal their union in a church wedding.

Despite the devastating loss, Jeruto bravely declared that she would proceed with the wedding as originally planned and make her vows on the scheduled day in honour of her late husband. In a touching tribute, she expressed, “We were planning for a big day to tie our knots in a colourful wedding ceremony in April 2024 but God’s plans are greater. I will still make my vows even in your rest. You were the best husband and father of my children. Dance with the angels, bye.”

Reflecting on Kiptum’s passing, Jeruto described it as a significant loss for her and their two children. She revealed that the thought of living without the athlete was heartbreaking, but she emphasized her dedication to caring for their children in his memory. Tearfully, she wrote, “My dear love, I cannot learn how to say goodbye to you. With weak fingers and pain in my heart, it is unbelievable that today I have learnt to stay with our beloved kids without you coming home again. I mourn my love. I have cried until no more. I miss you and you are the love of my life until we meet again. I promise to gather my strength for the sake of our children. Your help in the spirit world will inspire me to stand as a pillar for our children. I promise to make them smile in your honour. I will make you happy all the time.”

In a written tribute, Kiptum’s children praised their father as a hero and expressed that their lives would never be the same without him. They wrote, “We still cannot believe that you have left us. We will always remember you and love you. Life will never be the same without you.”

Following Jeruto’s emotional tribute, local leaders, including the area Member of Parliament Gideon Kimaiyo, called on President William Ruto and the county government to provide support for Kiptum’s family and secure a job for the widow. Additionally, Ruto is expected to hand over a three-bedroom house to Jeruto later in the day as a gesture of support.

The tragic incident that claimed Kiptum’s life occurred in a road accident on February 11, along the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road, where he lost his life alongside his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana. The athletic community mourns the loss of these two individuals, who were seen as icons in the world of marathon running. The memories and legacy of Kelvin Kiptum will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
