Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reassured that there will be no leadership vacuum within the Azimio coalition if Raila Odinga secures the African Union (AU) Commission Chairmanship position. Kalonzo, who has his eyes set on the presidency in 2027, assured Odinga’s supporters in Homa Bay that he is ready to step in and fill the void for those who may miss Raila in politics.
Speaking at the Homa Bay Investment Conference, Kalonzo addressed concerns among Raila’s backers, particularly within his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which he leads. He conveyed his readiness to guide the opposition in the right direction if given the opportunity to lead. Kalonzo emphasized that there is no need for fear and reassured the supporters that he would be there to take on the leadership role if necessary.
As Raila prepares to transition from Kenya’s domestic political scene, various leaders within the ODM party are positioning themselves for potential succession. Former Governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega) are among the contenders seen as potential leaders of the influential opposition group.
However, amid discussions about ODM succession, Kalonzo urged Raila to focus on campaigning for the AU Commission post and prioritize the process. He noted that Raila would need to put a halt to anti-government campaigns and seek President Ruto’s support for the position.
In the midst of these developments, Kalonzo’s reassurance to Odinga’s supporters and his willingness to step up in the absence of Raila reflect the shifting political landscape in Kenya. As the country prepares for potential leadership changes, the role of key figures like Kalonzo and other contenders within the ODM party will be crucial in shaping the future of the opposition.
Overall, Kalonzo’s statements underscore the importance of unity within the opposition and the need for a smooth transition of leadership. As the political landscape in Kenya continues to evolve, the actions and decisions of leaders like Kalonzo will play a significant role in determining the direction of the country’s political future.
