Jaoko Oburu, Raila Odinga’s nephew and the chairperson of the Global Chair of Friends of Baba Africa (FOBA), is leading a campaign to drum up support for his uncle’s bid to become the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson. The lobby group, FOBA, is working tirelessly to garner the needed support from across the continent to propel Raila to Addis Ababa.
In a recent post on March 11, Jaoko highlighted the mission of FOBA, which aims to establish a robust continental network in support of Raila. This network is envisioned to have representation from every African country, paving the way for Raila to visit and engage with leaders from each nation. Additionally, the lobby group will be responsible for tailoring Raila’s manifesto and messaging to suit the diverse needs and concerns of specific countries.
Given the magnitude of the task at hand, Jaoko, as the global chair of FOBA, will oversee the establishment of a comprehensive network across the continent. Representatives in each country will facilitate direct interactions between Raila and local leaders, enabling him to effectively customize his campaign message.
Raila declared his ambition to succeed Moussa Faki as AUC chair on February 15, following an endorsement from Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Subsequently, he has engaged in discussions with Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda to secure their support. Raila is also in the process of consolidating backing from all East African Community (EAC) heads of government.
The strategic approach adopted by FOBA, under Jaoko’s leadership, demonstrates a focused and concerted effort to ensure Raila’s successful bid for the AUC chairmanship. By establishing a strong network and tailoring messaging to cater to the specific needs of each country, the lobby group is positioning Raila as a candidate capable of addressing the diverse interests of the African continent.
Through targeted engagements with key stakeholders and leaders, Raila’s campaign is gaining momentum and support across the region. As he continues to garner backing from various nations, the groundwork laid by FOBA and Jaoko’s leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the narrative and securing the necessary support for Raila’s bid to lead the African Union Commission.
