A member of the ISIS terrorist group, identified as Mohamed Abdi Ali alias Abu Fidaa, Abu Shuhadaa, Abu Ramzi, was found guilty of five counts at the Milimani Law Courts on Friday, April 12. The charges against Abdi included being a member of the ISIS terror group, organizing a meeting in support of terrorist groups, recruiting members to the terrorist group, collection of information, and possession of articles connected with the commission of terrorist acts. Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku ruled that the prosecution had proven the case against Abdi beyond a reasonable doubt under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act No. 12 of 2011.
The prosecution presented testimonies from 26 witnesses, including the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) from the US, and Uganda Police. Led by SPPC Duncan Ondimu, the prosecution recommended a sentence of up to 90 years, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses and the potential impact on the country. Ondimu highlighted the defenseless nature of the victims, Abdi’s intelligence, and the use of technology to commit the crimes as grounds for the recommended sentence.
Despite the guilty verdict against Abdi, the court acquitted two individuals who were also charged with the convict. Abdi Ali was apprehended on April 29, 2016, at his residence in Wote Town, Makueni County, while his co-accused were arrested at the Entebbe International Airport in Uganda. The investigations linked them to the intended establishment of an ISIS caliphate in Kenya and East Africa. Abdi is scheduled to face sentencing on April 22, 2024.
In recent developments, the country has witnessed two alleged terror attacks resulting in the loss of eight lives. One incident occurred in the Milhoi area of Lamu County on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
