Kenyans have been issued a caution regarding potential internet disruptions that will be controlled for the next two months. This warning comes as a result of a subsea cable outage at the Red Sea, causing concerns about connectivity in the region. The interruption in internet services was initially reported on February 26, revealing that the subsea damage had impacted the section linking Mombasa, Kenya, to Zafarana, Egypt.
In a statement provided to Kenyans.co.ke, the internet service provider informed the public that the repair process would span over a minimum of eight weeks. E-marine, the repair partner in charge, has taken proactive measures by requesting repair permits from the appropriate authorities. The statement emphasized the regulatory process involved in obtaining the permits, indicating that it could potentially consume up to eight weeks.
Despite the estimated timeline for repairs, the global internet provider cautioned that there was no absolute assurance regarding the completion within eight weeks. The company remained hopeful for smooth progression in the repair endeavor but acknowledged the existing tensions at the Red Sea. These tensions have the potential to introduce unforeseen challenges that might hinder the repair timeline. Monitoring the situation closely, the company pledged to keep stakeholders informed about the repair operations’ progress.
Meanwhile, the internet company continues to maintain traffic on its cable network connecting Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa for transmission and IP services. The tension observed in the Red Sea region is linked to Houthi rebels who have been targeting ships using the sea route. Kenya is an active participant in Operation Prosperity Guardian, a US-led task force aimed at ending Houthi-led attacks on vessels navigating through the area.
The Defense Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, recently engaged with his US counterpart, Lloyd Austin, on February 7, 2023, to discuss strategies and actions within the operation. This collaboration underscores the importance of international efforts in addressing security challenges in the Red Sea. As the repair operations of the subsea cable progress, the company emphasized its commitment to navigating through potential obstacles and ensuring the restoration of stable internet connectivity in the affected regions. Vigilance, adaptability, and cooperation remain key in mitigating the impact of the cable outage and maintaining critical communication links.
