One of the leading global internet providers announced on Monday, February 26, that there were internet outages in Kenya and Egypt. The disruption was caused by the destruction of its subsea cable system over the weekend, which is currently awaiting repairs. The company mentioned that the conflict and tensions at the Red Sea were hindering its team of engineers from making the necessary repairs promptly.

The company explained that the location of the cable break was significant due to its geopolitical sensitivity and ongoing tensions, making it a challenging environment for maintenance and repair operations. The telecom indicated that the cable running from Mombasa, Kenya to Zafarana, Egypt remained compromised, leading to internet outages for clients not just in Kenya but also in East and Southern Africa.

Despite the challenges, the company assured its customers that it was working diligently to ensure the continuity of its services in the continent. In the interim, the company continued to carry traffic on its cable network between Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa for transmission and IP services. Although no entity has claimed responsibility for the destruction, the company affirmed that its other cables serving different parts of the world were not affected.

When asked about the expected timeline for the restoration of services, the company stated that their team was working towards setting restoration plans and would communicate them to their clients. In early February, internet users had been forewarned of such a potential incident occurring due to the involvement of Kenya in the United States-led ‘Operation Prosperity Guardian’, which aims to subdue Houthi rebels attacking ships in the Red Sea.

The company released a photo of a Kenyan using a smartphone and another photo of a ship at the Red Sea to emphasize the impact of the cable system disruption. Despite the challenges posed by the cable destruction, the company assured its customers of its commitment to restoring normalcy as soon as possible.

In conclusion, the internet outages in Kenya and Egypt caused by the subsea cable system destruction have highlighted the vulnerabilities of the global internet infrastructure. While the repair process may face obstacles due to the geopolitical situation in the region, the company is dedicated to resolving the issue and restoring connectivity for its customers in Africa.
