Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore announced on Wednesday, March 6, that the government is making progress in providing 9,000 Kenyans with certificates to work in the Affordable Housing Program. These certificates are being offered at 5 National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) branches.
Individuals who have not attended tertiary institutions will be given certificates of prior learning to demonstrate that they have the necessary skills to contribute to the program. This information was shared during a meeting between CS Bore and the members of the Board and management of NITA, led by board chairperson Aden Noor.
The NITA branches where these certificates are being offered include the Textile Training Institute in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Athi River. In addition to these locations, Kenyans can also receive their certificates from NITA-accredited centers, which can be accessed through the NITA website.
Already, NITA-accredited training sites have assessed and certified over 400 workers at Affordable Housing sites in Ruiru and Kibra. The goal is for the 9,000 certified Kenyans to work in 30 Affordable Housing sites across the country.
The Ministry of Labour highlighted that NITA has played a significant role in certifying workers through Recognition of Prior Learning programs. In addition to offering prior learning certificates in the Affordable Housing sector, over 300,000 Kenyans have been assessed for work in various fields.
Looking ahead to the 2023/2024 Financial Year, NITA plans to assess 80,000 workers, with a focus on preparing Kenyans who intend to work abroad. A Directorate of Labour Migration has been established to facilitate global market intelligence and skills development for migrant workers.
Kenyans seeking employment opportunities abroad will receive core skills training and pre-departure preparation tailored to specific destination countries. This initiative aims to equip Kenyan workers with the necessary tools for success in foreign job markets.
Overall, the collaboration between the Ministry of Labour, NITA, and other stakeholders demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing opportunities for Kenyan workers in the Affordable Housing sector and beyond. Through training and certification programs, the government is working towards enhancing the skills and employability of its citizens, both at home and abroad.
