Boniface Mwangangi, Joseph Irungu, and John Mutuku crossed paths in Dubai while seeking better opportunities. They now work for the authority in charge of the Riyadh Metro, the largest system in the Middle East. In an interview with Chams Media, the trio reflected on their journey from Kenya to playing key roles in running the metro, which is set to fully open later this year.
Mwangangi, Irungu, and Mutuku serve as Group Station Master, Station Operations Manager, and Station Manager respectively. When they left Kenya, they had no idea what the future held. Each of them had pursued different careers in Kenya, including working as a barista, a businessman, and in the hospitality industry.
During the interview, Mwangangi shared his experience of starting out as a barista in Dubai, emphasizing the importance of gaining exposure and experience. He advised those traveling abroad not to be choosy with jobs and to embrace opportunities that come their way. Mwangangi also stressed the importance of setting goals in every field to measure growth and performance.
Mutuku joined the Dubai workforce in the hospitality industry before transitioning to the transport sector and eventually joining the Riyadh Metro. He started as a customer service official before swiftly progressing to his current role as the Station Manager. Similarly, Irungu began as a customer service agent before advancing to become the Station Operations Manager. They emphasized the need to continuously update their skills due to the unveiling of new technology regularly.
The trio also emphasized that there are plenty of opportunities for Kenyans and other migrants seeking better prospects abroad. They refuted the negative stories associated with working in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing that the experiences of migrants highly depend on how they interact with the locals.
The Kenyan government recently announced plans to send more citizens abroad to secure competitive jobs, hoping that this will translate into increased diaspora remittances. The trio’s success story serves as an inspiration for other Kenyans seeking opportunities outside the country. Their journey highlights the importance of being open to diverse opportunities and continuously updating skills to match the demands of the ever-evolving job market.
