The Inspector General (IG) for police, Japhet Koome, recently issued a strong ultimatum for the arrest of a notorious drug baron in Mombasa. Speaking at the Coast Region Conference on Illicit Alcohol and Narcotic Drugs Abuse in Mombasa, Koome emphasized the urgency of the situation by demanding that the arrest be made within four days. He made it clear that there was no room for excuses and that local authorities needed to act swiftly.
During his address, Koome criticized the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) for defending the lack of action against drug abuse in the county. He dismissed their explanation that the difficult terrain in Mombasa hindered officers from carrying out their duties effectively. Koome declared this as an invalid excuse and called for accountability and responsibility in combating drug abuse.
The IG highlighted that the National Police Service had deployed a new regional commander in Mombasa, who was previously stationed in the North Eastern Region to combat terrorism. He challenged the new commander to fulfill his duties without using the terrain as an excuse, especially considering that the North Eastern region had even more challenging terrain.
Additionally, Koome criticized the current County Commissioner in the coastal region for failing to apprehend a drug baron despite being in office for a considerable amount of time. He also refuted claims made by the local administration about receiving calls whenever arrests were made, stating that he had never received any calls from higher authorities such as the President and Deputy President.
In his speech, Koome emphasized the need for ruthlessness in the fight against alcoholism and drug abuse, stating that the government’s efforts must be unwavering. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was also present at the event, echoed this sentiment and expressed his commitment to tackling drug and illicit alcohol abuse in the country.
Gachagua further criticized leaders who were absent from the meeting, noting that they should be spearheading efforts to combat the menace of drug abuse. He emphasized the importance of all leaders coming together to find solutions and address the challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse.
Overall, the IG’s call for urgent action against a drug baron in Mombasa underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a united front in combating drug abuse. The government officials present at the event reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the issue and working towards a safer and drug-free society.
