The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) is currently facing internal divisions despite its claims of unity, with speculations arising about the party leader vacating his position to vie for the African Union Commission Chairperson role. The recent endorsement of former governors Ali Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya to lead the party in Raila Odinga’s absence has further widened the divisions within the party.

Raila Odinga’s announcement on March 7 regarding the leadership transition has brought the simmering power struggle within the party to the forefront. The endorsement of Joho and Oparanya as potential leaders in his absence has sparked tensions among high-ranking members who are positioning themselves for leadership roles.

In the midst of these tensions, Joho, ODM’s Deputy Party Leader, has been vocal about his claim to the party’s leadership, citing his dedication and contributions to the party. Despite allegations of factionalism within the party, ODM’s National Assembly Minority Leader, Opiyo Wandayi, has emphasized that Odinga’s leadership remains unchallenged.

The internal strife has also manifested at the grassroots level, with conflicts in Kakamega County over leadership changes within the county assembly. Governor Fernandes Barasa’s accusations against ODM’s Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, have highlighted the power struggles within the party’s regional structures.

As the succession race heats up, various voices within ODM are staking their claims to leadership positions. Members like Babu Owino have expressed their aspirations for leadership roles, challenging Odinga’s recent endorsements. Despite claims of unity, the party’s internal dynamics continue to be fraught with competing ambitions and power struggles.

Meanwhile, officials from the National Alliance of Rainbow Coalition (NARC) have called for their party leader Martha Karua to take over from Odinga. The party is at a critical juncture as it navigates its future amidst mounting internal discord and questions remain about its national appeal post-Odinga’s departure.

The recent divisions raise important questions about the party’s future and how Odinga will reintegrate into local politics after his potential continental leadership role. The ODM faces a challenging period as it seeks to maintain its cohesion and relevance in the face of internal divisions and power struggles.
