Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed his amazement at the successful deliberations made by the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) on Friday, March 8. Speaking during the unveiling of the NADCO report at State House, Gachagua admitted that he was initially sceptical about the talks and wondered whether the discussions would see the light of day. However, he underestimated the will of the Kenyan people in the talks that aimed at burying the hatchet between the opposition and the government.
“I have since been impressed by what has happened and I think this is the way to go, Kenya is bigger than all of us,” Gachagua stated. The DP lauded the dialogue team for bringing peace to the country and enhancing government operations. He also expressed that the success of the talks addressed all concerns raised by the Azimio coalition during the anti-government protests.
“We have a plan and a mandate with the people of Kenya that we would like to execute and implement,” the DP noted. “Going forward, after the two houses have done justice to the report, we believe that we will have peace forever and never again shall we settle our political differences in the streets of Nairobi and other towns.”
Gachagua’s remarks come against the backdrop of his past sentiments where he claimed the dialogue talks were Raila’s secret plan to use Kalonzo to popularize himself. In his previous statements in August 2023, Gachagua further claimed that the ODM leader was prioritizing his personal gains at the expense of issues facing Kenyans. He expressed doubts about the outcome of the talks, stating, “Nothing will come out of those talks. It is a waste of time. I’m telling you as Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.”
The DP criticized Raila for allegedly only speaking for himself, his kids, and his people, and for sending Kalonzo to talks that did not address the issues facing Ukambani. However, Gachagua’s tone has since changed, as he now acknowledges the success of the dialogue talks and the positive impact they have had on the country.
The NADCO report was unveiled at State House, with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his NADCO co-chair Kimani Ichung’wah displaying the bipartisan talks recommendations. This event marked a significant milestone in the efforts to bridge the gap between the opposition and the government.
In conclusion, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s initial skepticism towards the National Dialogue Committee has transformed into praise and support for the successful deliberations made by the team. The NADCO report represents a step towards lasting peace and political stability in Kenya, illustrating the importance of dialogue and compromise in resolving national issues.
