The conflict surrounding a disputed land in Nyali, Mombasa County reached a new level of intensity on Wednesday as armed individuals forcibly entered a private school located on the contentious piece of property. This brazen act involved the demolition of the school’s perimeter wall, instilling fear and chaos among the school staff and local residents.
Reports from the area indicate that a member of a wealthy family, laying claim to a portion of the land, allegedly orchestrated the invasion by hiring these goons to intimidate and coerce the occupants of the school into leaving. The gang not only targeted the physical property but also verbally threatened the teachers and residents present on the school premises during the attack.
The aggrieved residents are now calling upon the National Land Commission (NLC) to step in and address the situation before any further damage occurs. They are frustrated by the lack of action and justice, with one resident highlighting the influence of the landowner’s connections hindering the progress of legal proceedings. The delay in resolving the land dispute has left many residents in limbo, with a plea for intervention from law enforcement to investigate the incident and apprehend those responsible for the destruction of the school.
In a separate incident, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detained a suspect believed to have led a gang of five in a robbery at the Bishop Sulumeti Chelelemuk Girls Secondary School in Teso North sub-county, Mombasa County. The gang targeted the school offices, stealing laptops and money, with the DCI linking them to a series of violent robberies across several counties in the region.
Following the arrest of the key suspect, investigations are underway to locate and apprehend the additional members of the gang, with law enforcement obtaining custodial orders to launch a comprehensive search. The authorities are determined to bring all culprits to justice and ensure that such criminal activities are swiftly dealt with to safeguard the community.
The escalating conflicts over contested lands underscore the need for a transparent and efficient resolution process, emphasizing the importance of upholding property rights and preventing unlawful encroachments. It is imperative for all stakeholders, including government agencies, law enforcement, and community members, to collaborate in addressing land disputes and maintaining peace and order within the region. Only through collective efforts and adherence to the rule of law can these conflicts be effectively mitigated and resolved for the benefit of all parties involved.
