Haiti business leaders expressed their concern over the delay in the deployment of Kenyan police to their country. In a letter addressed to President William Ruto, the leaders of eight top business chambers urged him to expedite the deployment process in order to help Haiti on its path to recovery. Despite an agreement being reached on the deployment, the mission had been delayed by six months, much to the disappointment of the leaders.
One of the major issues highlighted by the leaders was the fast-approaching deadline for deployment, which was supposed to happen within the first 12 months after the agreement was made. This delay was seen as detrimental to Haiti’s recovery efforts, especially with the escalating violence and instability caused by gangs in the country’s cities. The business leaders emphasized the urgency of the situation and called for immediate action to ensure the successful deployment of Kenyan police officers to Haiti.
The United Nations Security Council had approved Kenya’s deployment of troops to Haiti in October the previous year, following a request from United States President Joe Biden. President Biden had offered substantial funding to support the multinational mission, emphasizing the urgency of the situation in Haiti at the time. Subsequently, on March 1, Kenya signed an agreement with Haiti to deploy 1,000 police officers to the Caribbean nation.
The signing of the agreement took place at State House in the presence of Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry and Kenya’s President William Ruto. Ruto declared Kenya’s commitment to providing their police officers’ experience and expertise in the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, as mandated by the United Nations Security Council and guided by Kenyan courts.
The business leaders also welcomed the formation of a presidential transitional council in Haiti, noting that it would play a crucial role in restoring much-needed stability and peace in the country. The turbulent situation in Haiti, exacerbated by gang violence and political unrest, underscored the importance of the deployment of Kenyan police officers to assist in maintaining security and order.
Through their letter to President Ruto, the business leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with Kenya to ensure the successful deployment of police officers to Haiti. They recognized the challenges faced by the Caribbean nation and expressed their support for the efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Haiti. The timely deployment of Kenyan police officers was seen as a crucial step towards helping Haiti overcome its current challenges and move towards a brighter future.
