The National Lands Commission (NLC) has recently identified and published the names of more than 300 landlords who will be affected by the construction of a 220 Kilovolts transmission line in Kwale and Kilifi counties. This move comes as part of the plan to construct a wayleave corridor on their parcels of land, with the intention of building an electricity transmission line consisting of towers and conductors.

In a Gazette Notice published on Friday, February 23, the NLC, acting on behalf of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), informed the landlords of the upcoming construction project. The Commission assured the landowners that they would be compensated for any inconveniences caused during the construction process.

According to the notification, the government plans to acquire a wayleave corridor on the listed parcels of land for the construction of the 220KV Transmission line in Mariakani – Dongo Kundu 220 KV Transmission Line in Kwale/Kilifi counties. The project involves the construction of towers and conductors that will run through the affected land.

Landowners were encouraged to share their feedback on the project, whether in support or opposition, by writing to the Commission via the provided mailbox address in Nairobi. The notice also mentioned that plans for the affected land could be inspected at various offices, including the National Land Commission in Nairobi, KETRACO offices in Nairobi, Kwale, and Kilifi counties.

The majority of the landlords affected by the construction owned parcels of land measuring less than 1 hectare, with a few exceptions. Some of the larger landowners included a ranch with 60.49 hectares, a businessman with 1.18 hectares, a resident identified as N.A.M owning 1.29 hectares, and 13.82 hectares of unadjudicated land.

The transmission line project is part of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) connecting the Coast Region. It is expected to play a crucial role in providing a reliable and adequate power supply to the region. Once completed, the transmission line will enhance access to electricity in line with President William Ruto’s green energy initiatives across the country.

The focus on improving the energy infrastructure in the region is evident, as seen in the installation of transformers by Kenya Power technicians in Kisumu County. This signifies a commitment to expanding and improving the electricity supply network to meet the growing demands of the population and support economic development in the area.
