The Ministry of Labour recently flagged off the first batch of National Youth Service (NYS) graduates who are set to leave the country for employment opportunities in Saudi Arabia. A total of 46 graduates are embarking on this journey to secure various jobs in the foreign nation. The flagging-off event was presided over by Labour Principal Secretary Shadrack Mwadime, who emphasized the importance of establishing an international brand of excellent labor sourced from NYS graduates due to their high discipline.

The graduates selected for this opportunity will be taking up roles as health caregivers and administration assistants, among others. This initiative is part of a larger plan by the government to create job opportunities for Kenyan youths by sending them abroad. The Ministry of Labour aims to release separate batches of NYS graduates to different countries, thereby expanding the pool of employment options for the nation’s youth.

In early February, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria had announced the government’s plans to export NYS officers overseas. He highlighted the ongoing labor export process and the facilitation of passport issuance at NYS Headquarters in Ruaraka to support this initiative. Kuria stressed that this move aligns with the Labour Exportation Programme, which aims to leverage the skills and capabilities of NYS graduates for international employment opportunities.

The decision to deploy NYS graduates for overseas jobs was further reinforced by President William Ruto during a pass-out ceremony in Gilgil, Nakuru in December 2023. He directed that all Kenyans seeking employment abroad must undergo NYS training before deployment to help them better understand the nature of the jobs available. President Ruto also mentioned ongoing negotiations with countries like Germany, Saudi Arabia, and others regarding the export of labor, with NYS playing a central role in providing redeployment training for Kenyan workers.

The government’s focus on utilizing NYS graduates for international opportunities reflects a strategic effort to empower the youth and enhance Kenya’s workforce on a global scale. By equipping these graduates with the necessary skills and experiences, the aim is to create sustainable employment opportunities and contribute to the country’s economic development. This initiative not only benefits the individual graduates but also strengthens Kenya’s position in the global labor market as a source of highly competent and disciplined workers.
