Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba made a significant announcement on Tuesday, March 13, regarding the end of double taxation for Kenyan athletes. The decision was revealed during a press conference held ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where CS Namwamba disclosed that discussions with the Kenya Revenue Authority had led to the establishment of a framework to protect Kenyan sportsmen and women from double taxation.

The issue of double taxation has been a longstanding concern for Kenyan athletes, who often faced tax deductions both in foreign countries where they earned their winnings and in Kenya. Athletes had raised this issue as a major challenge, prompting the government to take action. CS Namwamba expressed his satisfaction in announcing that a deal had been struck with the KRA and the treasury to ensure that athletes would only be taxed once, with the deduction being made at the source of the funds.

The timing of this decision is crucial, considering the upcoming Paris Olympics scheduled to take place from July 26, 2024, to August 11, 2024. Kenya’s National Olympics Committee has been working tirelessly to prepare Team Kenya for the prestigious event, employing a multi-sectoral approach to ensure that the athletes are well-equipped for the competition.

Team Kenya CEO for the Paris Olympics, Wanjiru Mbugua, highlighted the preparations underway for the athletes, including the formation of committees responsible for training and preparations. Short-term training camps have been organized to allow athletes who have qualified or are on the qualifying pathway to bond and prepare adequately for the Olympics.

This move to end double taxation for Kenyan athletes reflects the government’s commitment to supporting and promoting sports in the country. By eliminating the burden of double taxation, athletes can now focus on their training and performances without the worry of facing excessive tax deductions from their earnings. The collaboration between the Sports Ministry, KRA, and the treasury signifies a proactive approach to addressing the concerns raised by athletes and ensuring a conducive environment for their success.

As preparations for the Paris Olympics continue, Team Kenya remains dedicated to providing the necessary support and resources to help athletes perform at their best on the global stage. With the assurance of being taxed only once on their earnings, Kenyan athletes can now concentrate on their athletic pursuits with peace of mind, knowing that their hard work and achievements will be duly recognized and rewarded.
