The Public Service Commission (PSC) recently announced its search for a new Director General of Health, a position that has been held by Patrick Amoth in an acting capacity for the past five years. Along with this, the Commission is also looking to fill the position of Amoth’s deputy. These vacancies were advertised alongside 813 others as part of the Commission’s efforts to recruit state officials across various government departments, including Health, Agriculture, and Mining.
Patrick Amoth took on the role of Acting Director General of Health in 2019 and has been serving in that capacity ever since. However, concerns have been raised regarding the government’s delay in confirming him or appointing a permanent occupant. In April of last year, there were reports suggesting that Amoth had been officially confirmed for the position, only for the Health Ministry to clarify that he was still acting in the role. Despite promises from Health CS Nakhumicha to fill the position by October 31, 2022, Amoth was not considered for the permanent position.
During the pandemic outbreak in March 2020, Amoth, alongside former Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, played a significant role in guiding Kenyans through the crisis. His exceptional leadership and technical expertise led the World Health Organization (WHO) to appoint him as President of its Executive Board in Geneva, Switzerland, in June 2021.
For those interested in applying for the PSC positions, detailed information can be found on the Commission’s website. The application process is to be done online through the Commission’s website, with the deadline for submissions set for March 19.
Overall, the search for a new Director General of Health, along with other government positions, highlights the importance of filling critical roles in the public sector. As the government aims to strengthen its workforce in various departments, the recruitment process seeks to identify qualified individuals who can contribute to the effective functioning of these areas. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply and be part of the team working towards the betterment of public service delivery in Kenya.
